Grundig TK 14 L

Such a tape recorder I owned once more than 30 years ago. Even then I was fascinated by such tape devices. Although the Grundig TK 14 L is the "low-end version" of this range, it does not mean that it is not a good tape recorder. Two tracks in mono operation, no band end switch, no tape counter (instead only one scale between the tape reels), no automatic control and no stereo. All this the TK 14 does not need. What is not there can not be broken. As the only luxury, a magical band (EM84) was given to the reel to reel tape recorder as a control instrument for the record level. Other tubes are an ECC83 as well as an ECL86 as a output stage tube.

The TK 14 already has some usage traces, as can be seen clearly here. Unfortunately it does not work anymore. Why, more details below.

The scale between the tape reels should provide a little help in finding the desired tape position. A real tape counter is much more accurate.

After the removal of the upper equipment cover you can already guess that this TK 14 was not ideally stored. The chassis is not in a good condition. Also the drive belt was defective. The image shows the tape recorder after replacing the belt during a first function test. It ran, but the built-in loudspeaker sounded horribly.

Here you can see clearly why. Dust and dirt on the membrane were the causes. But even after removal, the loudspeaker did not sound very healthy. Apparently, dirt is between the coil and the magnet. Unfortunately, I had to replace this loudspeaker.

The loudspeaker is fixed with two screws. I have unscrewed the amplifier board and simply laid down. This makes the exchange easier to carry out.

On the board of the TK 14 are two tubes (ECL86 and ECC83).

The Grundig TK 14 L after repair. It is a very simple tape recorder. Like most reel to reel tape recorders with tubes, also the TK 14 has a separate mains transformer.
